A Closer Look At Sou Fujimoto's Palm Court In The Design District

Palm Court Under Construction In The Design District

Since we last looked at the Design District expansion, the area has progressed rapidly, especially Palm Court.

Part of the new development in the Design District is the addition of the Paseo Ponti walkway which will connect all the retail and restaurants between 38th St. to 42nd St. At the southern most tip of the Paseo Ponti walkway is the Palm Court.

Palm Court will be a mixed used retail area that is highlighted by a two floor glass structure designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. The blue glass structure was inspired by waterfalls and Miami's rain. The glass fins will go from the rooftop all the way down to the courtyard floor and is visually stunning to look at.

Along the the glass "waterfall," the centerpiece of Palm Court will be Buckminster Fuller's 24 foot "Fly's Eye Dome." The glass dome will sit atop a round opening that will lead people to the underground parking below all the retail shops.

On the second level of Palm Court will be a 5,000 square foot event space designed by Aranda/Lasch that will have folding hardwood doors to create an indoor/outdoor environment.

Palm Court is expected to be completed by the end of 2014/early 2015.

From 6pm to 8pm Miami Beach will have the grand opening for South Pointe Park Pier.

The old pier had been closed since 2004 until city officials decided to build a new one to go along with the revised South Pointe Park that opened in 2009.

The project cost $4.8 million and is a great spot to watch cruise ships come in and out of Port of Miami or to watch the sunrise.

The radio tower next to the Miami Herald Building was supposed to come down last month, but after some delays the tower started to come down earlier this week.

The tower is currently halfway down and should be completely removed by early next week or sooner.

Genting is still tearing down the Miami Herald building, which is taking a long time.

Before Brickell City Centre There Was The Brickell Tennis Club

Brickell Tennis Club Was Located in the Heart of Brickell

In the middle of Brickell's urban sprawl was a tennis club that occupied over a block of land. The Brickell Tennis Club was located at 601 South Miami Ave and had multiple tennis courts with a clubhouse. It was built approximately between 2003-2005.

In March of 2011, Swire Properties acquired the land for $14 million to build the $1.05 billion Brickell City Centre. The condo Reach Brickell City Centre will be built on the land that was previously the Brickell Tennis Club.

In July of 2012, Swire was able to acquire the land to the North of the Brickell Tennis Club that was used as the parking lot for the facilities. This land is part of the second phase of construction for Brickell City Centre and will be the location of the condo North Squared.

Demolition of the Brickell Tennis Club began in May of 2012.

Below are photos from demolition.
