Demolition Of The Oldest Bar In Miami - Tobacco Road

TBT (November 19, 2014) - 4 years ago this month Tobacco Road was demolished after 102 years of history. We previously showed a photo tour of the building before it was torn down and a photo tour of the building as it was being stripped inside. After the lot sat empty for years, a pizza place recently opened on the site and the land will eventually be part of the the Brickell City Centre expansion with a 54 story condo.

Over the past 10 plus days, demolition has taken place on the 102 year old Tobacco Road. The demolition crew was Thunder Demolition with Group 3 Contractors.

The bar held the first liquor license in Miami and now debris from the building is all that remains on the site.

During the demolition, the team from Thunder Demolition was able to save the original Dade-County Pine from the building. Employees from Tobacco Road plan on using the original wood to make coasters, cutting boards and tables to preserve the history of the original location. General Manager Joel Rivera and employees still need to raise $50,000 and are doing this until December 2 through Kickstarter. They need any donations possible to help move into a new location across the lot.

Demolition Begins At Bayside Motor Inn

Demolition has begun at 5101 Biscayne Boulevard at the Bayside Motor Inn.

Developed by Mattoni Group and Avra Jain, the redeveloped Bayside Motor Inn will have a new three story building on the North part of the site at 18,994 square feet with ground floor retail and offices on the top two floors. The South part of the hotel will be renovated and restored to be used as a restaurant. The designs were done by Urban Robot Associates.

Built in 1952, the Bayside Motor Inn was purchased for $4,050,000 million in June 2016 by Bayside 5101 LLC.

The Miami Historic and Environmental Preservation Board approved of the plans in February 2017.

Demolition and Renovation Starts On Scarface Building At 728 Ocean Drive

Demolition and renovation has started at 728 Ocean Drive after being purchased for $12.4 million in 2015 by New York based Infinity Group. The first floor of the two story building was a Johnny Rockets Restaurant, while the second floor sat vacant. Plans are to turn the building into a CVS.

The back portion of the building is currently being demolished, but the original front façade, including the round Art Deco porthole windows will be restored.

Built in 1953, by architect Don Reiff in a post war modern style architecture, the building was originally three stories with 21 apartments units called the Sun Ray Apartments. The apartment was known for the 1983 Al Pacino movie Scarface, which has the infamous chainsaw scene.

As South Beach experienced a rebirth during the late 80's, the building was purchased in 1989 by Irene Marie. She renovated the property using preservationist architect Les Beilinson and converted the three story building into two floors and used the top floor for the Irene Marie Modeling Agency and the first floor was a restaurant called the The Booking Table, which later became Johnny Rockets.

In 2011, Irene Marie sold the the building to MER Ocean Drive Holdings for $8 million who then sold it for $12.4 million four years later to Infinity Group.

Demolition has started at the former City Hall Restaurant site in Edgewater located at 2000 Biscayne Boulevard.

The 32,775 square foot site was purchased in early 2016 for $13 million by the Verzasca Group, which is led by former NHLer Darius Kasparaitis.

A 649 foot tower designed by ODP Architects has already been approved by the FAA.

American Legion Post 29 Building Demolished

The American Legion’s Harvey W. Seeds Post 29 Building located at 6445 NE 7th Avenue on the Upper East Side has been demolished after starting demolition work the past two weeks.

To the West of the American Legion property between Biscayne Boulevard and NE 7th Ave and bordering Legion Park and NE 64th St are 17 abandoned residences on a 6.45 acre site. These low rise buildings built between 1940 and 1972, were purchased by ACRE GCDM Bay Investment II (Global City Development) for $10.9 million. Residents have left their properties by February 29th of this year and the buildings have been boarded up and abandoned since.
